Al-Farouqi Ends "Thrilling" Aramco Career

"It was a thrilling experience," said Munawar Ghulam Al Farouqi about the early years of his 43-year career with Saudi Aramco. He said it was as though Aladdin had rubbed his fairytale lamp when " 'Jabal Dhahran' changed from a desert and rocky area into a city of portables and paved roads almost overnight." Al-Farouqi retires November 01 from Government Affairs, where he is a staff advisor in contractor-liaison activities.
Al-Farouqi joined General Accounting as a clerk in 1948. When the original Dhahran Administration Building was built in the early 1950s, he was a construction accountant on the project. He later worked as a cost accountant and an auditor, and in 1965, he became supervisor of Materials Accounting. He trasferred in 1977 to Gas Projects as a project engineer, partly responsible for the accounting of the first phase construction of the gas-gathering facilities. When the project was completed in 1979, al-Farouqi joined Government Affairs a a contractor liaison, handling and coordinating Aramco and non-Aramco construction projects. He said working and associating with so many different nationalies made his career with Aramco especially rewarding.
Al-Farouqi's recreation requirements are uncomplicated. He enjoys life's simple pleasures - early morning walks, evening swims, light reading and visists with friends. He has also traveled with the Dhahran Outing Group for many years, and is looking forward to traveling without any time constraints during his retirment.
Rather than settle in one place, al-Farouqi plans to split his time between al-Khobar and Makkah. He and his wife, Khadija, married in 1956 in Makkah, where their daughter, Mona, a medical doctor, now lives.
